Healthy Breasts

Prevention magazine has five simple tips for women that can help you reduce your risk of breast cancer:

Exercise:  You guessed it.  Every part of our body benefits from a consistent exercise routine.  But did you know that exercise lowers estrogen levels - and estrogen is linked to breast cancer?  Walking for thirty minutes a day, five days a week is a cardiovascular activity.  That means it's good for your heart, burns fat and makes you feel good as well.

Slim down:  Obese women who are post-menopausal have twice the cancer risk of a woman with a healthy weight.  It turns out that there is a correlation between weight gain and breast cancer risk, even in a previously slender woman.  How much is too much?  Even gaining twenty pounds increases your risk of breast cancer.

Take Vitamin D:  Vitamin D has a cancer fighting ability and can be found in vitamin supplements.  For women who don't like to use dietary supplements milk is also a good source of Vitamin D.  The best source of Vitamin D is the sun - but don't overdo it because Mr. Sunshine is the number one cause of premature wrinkles.

Limit alcohol consumption:  Data from the National Cancer Institute shows that women who have one or two drinks per day increase your risk of breast cancer by 32%

Be self aware:  Did you know that the monthly breast self-exam is now considered optional?  Nevertheless doctors still want you to be familiar with your breasts and alert your doctor to any abnormal changes.
