Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops Dies
Four Tops lead singer Levi Stubbs died on Friday at the age of 72. He died in his sleep after being ill from cancer and a stroke for several years.
Old Timers grooved to Stubbs' rich voice in Motown hits like "I Can't Help Myself" and "Standing in the Shadows of Love" when the Temptations and the Four Tops dominated the R&B music scene during the sixties and into the seventies. In the nineties the Four Tops had a resurgence of popularity as the voice of the singing California Raisins in TV commercials.
Propelled to fame after joining Motown, the Four Tops sang together for 43 years before member Lawrence Payton died in 1997. To my knowledge the group never replaced Payton. Abdul Fakir is the only surviving group member. Levi Stubbs is survived by his wife.
