Asthma Inhalers Go Green on December 31
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) the chemical used to puff albuterol into the lungs of asthma sufferers will be replaced by the more eco-friendly chemical hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) on December 31. The new HFA inhalers are more expensive than CFCs and must be used differently. The medicine feels and tastes different.
Albuterol is dispensed by prescription to asthma and emphysema patients. Primatene Mist a non-prescription inhaler contains a different drug called epinephrine which also contains CFCs. Sale of these inhalers will continue until December 2011.
