Broken Eyeglasses Scam
This one is weird. Manhattan's Midtown North Precinct is circulating flyers with photos to alert New Yorkers and tourists that a gang of eyeglass scammers is on the loose. These five guys deliberately bump into strangers and then produce a pre-broken pair of eyeglasses as part of the scam. The grifter accuses the stranger of breaking his glasses and makes a big scene demanding payment.
Victims often pay them $20 or so just to get rid of them. One victim suggested that they go to his office to work it out and the grifter disappeared. The last known incident occurred on West 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue. Source
