What Ever Happened to Anita Bryant?

Baby boomers may remember Anita Bryant. She was the woman in the orange juice commercials who said "Breakfast without orange juice is like a day without sunshine." Perhaps you remember her singing "Come to the Florida sunshine tree."

Bryant was a Miss America contest runner up in 1959. She parlayed that success into a singing career and endorsed quite a fews products including Coca Cola and Kraft Foods. She toured with Bob Hope and entertained at the White House.

You may recall that in the late seventies she began to crusade against gay rights. Gay rights activists boycotted the products she endorsed and Mrs. Sunshine seemed to disappear from the face of the earth. So did all her friends, endorsements and entertainment engagements.

Anita Bryant has spent the last thirty years trying to resurrect her career. She and her second husband have filed bankruptcy twice. They have a history of bounced checks and creditors who want to get paid. They owe the federal government an amount in the six figures. Bigotry does not pay.
