What Ever Happened to These TV Moms?
Do you wonder what happened to your favorite sitcom moms once the camera stopped rolling? The Daily News has rounded up moms from thirty popular sitcoms of the past and updated us on what they've been doing. Five are highlighted below. Check the source document for the full list. It's fun.
Daily News
- Phylicia Rashad played Clair Huxtable in The Cosbys. She won a Tony Award for her performance in the play A Raisin in the Sun in 2004. She also had success in the all-black version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway in 2008 and I just read that it will return to the stage this year. Last fall Rashad became a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and she looks great.
- Roseanne Barr played the mom on Roseanne. In 2003 she produced a pilot for a TV sitcom and a reality show. Both tanked. She still does stand-up comedy and she hosts a radio show.
- Janet Hubert-Whitten played Vivian Banks (Aunt Viv) on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. After the third season she was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reed. The scuttlebutt is that she left due to personality conflicts but I don't recall whether it was with the show producer or her TV husband. Since leaving the show Hubert-Whitten has had guest roles on Gilmore Girls, Friends and One Life to Live.
- Patricia Richardson played Jill Taylor on Home Improvement. The relationship between Richardson and her TV husband Tim Allen was reported to have deteriorated so badly over the course of the series that Tim Allen ended the show sooner than he wanted to. The actress was last seen in a recurring role on The West Wing.
- Jean Stapleton played Archie Bunker's wife Edith in All in the Family. Since then we've seen her in a lot of stuff including Touched by an Angel and Everybody Loves Raymond. Just last Saturday I saw her in You've Got Mail. Stapleton has not appeared on TV since 2001.
