How Necessary are Vitamin Supplements?

Do you take one or more daily vitamin supplements? You are not alone. Vitamin stores are a booming business in America. However, experts believe that most of us get all the vitamins our body needs through a well balanced diet. There are exceptions such as pregnant women, the elderly and people with vitamin deficiencies.

Several recent studies debunk the mythical qualities of synthetic vitamin supplements. However, there are several supplements that researchers say won't hurt you at the recommended dosage.
  • Multivitamins. These have no healing properties but many researchers think of them as an "inexpensive insurance policy."
  • Calcium and Vitamin D. We need calcium to protect our bones and vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. The sun is the primary source of vitamin D.
  • Fish oil. This is one synthetic supplement that does seem to make a difference. Research suggests that fish oil is good for the heart. It contains omega-3 fatty acids.
The jury is still out on synthetic antioxidant supplements. Just this week women with breast cancer were cautioned not to use them. There is concern that they interfere with cancer treatment. Check the source link for additional information.
