Reverend Ike Dies at 74

Reverend J. Eikerenkoetter II better known as Reverend Ike passed away in Los Angeles on Tuesday at the age of 74. He had a stroke in 2007 and never fully recovered. The flamboyant Harlem minister was a trail blazer for ministers of today who preach prosperity.

During his hey day in the seventies Rev. Ike toured the country advising parishioners to forget about pie in the sky and search for the god inside for divine power. He believed that St. Paul got it wrong. His philosophy was that love of money is not the root of all evil, but rather lack of money is what causes problems.

Rev. Ike was born in South Carolina and became assistant pastor to his father's congregation at the age of 14. He came to New York City in the mid-sixties and set up shop in an old movie theater. In 1969 he paid more than one half million dollars for the old Loews 175th Street movie theater which became his headquarters.

Rev. Ike is survived by his wife and his son Xavier F. Eikerenkoetter who took over the ministry when he retired. He continues to operate from the church founded by his father. The second source link maps to the church's website which has great photos of Rev. Ike, his family, his church and his cars.
