Ban on Telemarketing Calls Starts Today

Consumers no longer have to tolerate annoying "robocalls" as of September 1. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has banned these calls unless the telemarketer has written permission from the customer. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $16,000 per call.

In the past you had to join a do-not-call list to avoid these prerecorded calls but now all consumers are protected whether you join or not. However, calls that do not fall under the jurisdiction of the FTC are not covered under the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Examples are listed.

Exceptions
  • Flight cancellations
  • Delivery notices
  • Creditors
  • Politicians
  • Charities
  • Banks
  • Insurers
  • Phone companies
  • Survey calls
  • Certain health messages
That's a long list but it's a start. Don't forget that once you request some of the above to stop calling they must comply within a certain time frame. Call the FTC with complaints about any calls that you believe are in violation of FTC guidelines.
