New Medical Marijuana Rules

The Justice Department released a new policy on Monday advising federal prosecutors not to invest resources in going after medical marijuana users and their distributors. The new rules apply only in states where marijuana is allowed for medical purposes, and provided that the activity is in strict compliance with the state law.

The guidelines urge federal agents to continue to target distributors who operate outside legal parameters or use medical marijuana to cover up illegal activities. Prosecutors should pursue cases that involve violence, illegal use of firearms, selling marijuana to minors, money laundering or involvement in other crimes.

Advocates say marijuana is an effective remedy for ailments such as chronic pain and nausea. Some form of use is allowed for medical purposes in fourteen states.
