WWRL Veteran Hank Spann Dies
"Two steps to the rear and I'm out of here." That was the signoff for former WWRL disc jockey Hank Spann who passed away at his home in California last week. He had been ill for awhile.
New York baby boomers may remember Hank Spann from the Frankie Crocker days at WWRL (1600 AM). The lineup boasted Spann, Bobby Jay, Gary Byrd, Enoch Hawthorne Gregory (the Dixie Drifter), Jeff Troy and Jerry "B" Bledsoe. Frankie Crocker left early in the game and Bob Law came on board.

I am 54, I grew up in Brooklyn listening to WWRL as a kid. Hank Spann had class and was a great personality. That type of radio was creative and very expressive of the Black culture of the time.
