Comedian Soupy Sales Dies at 83
Comedian Soupy Sales died of cancer at a hospice in the Bronx last Thursday at the age of 83. His former manager Dave Usher said he had multiple health problems.
Baby boomers remember The Soupy Sales Show and his puppet sidekicks White Fang and Black Tooth. The man born as Milton Supman is best remembered for being pied. The pie in the face segment became so famous that celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Tony Curtis and Shirley McLaine happily came on the show so they could be pied as well.
After his show ended Soupy Sales became a longtime panelist on What's My Line, and was a regular guest on programs like The Mike Douglas Show and The Love Boat. During the eighties he became host of a variety talk show on WNBC radio which was sandwiched between Don Imus and Howard Stern's show.
Soupy Sales published his memoirs in 2001. The North Carolina native remained active in the celebrity circuit until he became wheel chair bound five years ago. He is survived by his wife and two children. Source
