FTC Cautions Against "Free Credit Report" Sites
The federal government is not amused by websites that lure consumers into monthly subscriptions with the promise of a free credit report. They are so fed up that they have launched their own videos which spoof the misleading websites.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) claims that websites like FreeCreditReport.com want to confuse consumers who are looking for the official free credit report website which is AnnualCreditReport.com. Interesting enough FreeCreditReport is owned by Experian, one of the three major credit reporting agencies on the official site.
We actually referred visitors to FreeCreditReport in a prior blog post because they provide a free FICO score. However, we highlighted the disclaimer on their home page regarding the automatic membership enrollment which must be cancelled within seven days. It turns out that FTC pressed the site owner to display that type of prominent disclosure.
