The Horrors of Movie Theater Snacks (Popcorn Study)

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is at it again. Early in the year we posted the link to their "2009 Xtreme Eating Awards" for restaurants that serve fatty foods and oversized portions. Now they've done a study of movie theater snacks.

Did you know that?

  • A small popcorn at Regal Theaters contains 670 calories and 34 grams of saturated fat. That’s about as many calories as a Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pepperoni Pizza.
  • A large popcorn at AMC Theaters contains 1,030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat. That's like eating a pound of baby back ribs topped with a scoop of Häagen-Dazs ice cream.
  • A medium combo of soda and popcorn at Regal contains 1,610 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat. That's roughly the saturated fat of a stick of butter and the calories of two sticks of butter.
  • Eating a one ounce bag of Reese's Pieces is like eating a 16-ounce T-bone steak and a buttered baked potato.
This study gives the calorie counts for popcorn, soft drinks and candy at Regal, AMC and Cinemark movie theaters. Check the source link to see what else they say. (The pictures make me want some hot buttered popcorn.)

This is absolutely horrifying to me. I am a huge movie fan, usually visiting the theater once a week to indulge in a new film and a big bucket of popcorn. I am on a very well balanced diet but I guess I have been throwing a wrench in in every Thursday night! Thanks for the post. I hope that you can do a follow-up post with the healthiest snacks at the theater!
