New Pap Smear Recommendations
The dust had not settled from the controversy surrounding last week's federally appointed advisory panel recommendations for breast cancer screening, before the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released their guidelines for cervical cancer screening.
ACOG says pap smears are not necessary for women younger than 21 years of age; and women older than 21 do not need to have the screening every year. Evidence suggests that frequent testing can impact a woman's ability to carry a baby full term. ACOG wants to reduce the risk associated with unnecessary treatment. Source
