Teddy Pendergrass Dies at 59
Singer Teddy Pendergrass died in a hospital on Wednesday in his native Philadelphia at the age of 59. He had colon cancer surgery last year and his son said he never fully recovered.
Pendergrass rose to fame as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes during the early seventies. He left the group in 1975 and became a best selling solo artist one year later. Turn Out the Lights may have been his most famous song as a solo artist. The sexy balladeer was so popular with his female fans that he began to have "Ladies Only" concerts.
In the early eighties Teddy Pendergrass was partially paralyzed in an auto accident. He sued Rolls Royce for brake failure and the case was settled out of court. Pendergrass continued to sing and record music. He appeared onstage at several benefit concerts such as Live Aid, where he performed from his wheel chair. In the new millennium Pendergrass began to perform at his own concerts once again.
We posted links to a 1998 Jet magazine feature article and two different obituaries. Neither obituary gives much information about surviving family members but our silent radio DJ Keith Sweat says Teddy Pendergrass is survived by his wife and three children.
