NYC Fire Department Ordered to Correct Racial Bias

A federal judge has ruled that the NYC Fire Department must take immediate action to remedy discriminatory hiring practices that kept out black and Latino applicants.

Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis said the 7,400 minority job applicants who took biased exams between 1999 and 2002 should be able to apply for compensation of lost wages. Of that number, 293 applicants would receive priority hiring status and retroactive seniority.

New York City has denied discrimination. They plan to appeal the order.
