Bronx Old London Bakery Closing
First we lost Stella D'Oro. Now Old London Foods plans to move its bakery from Eastchester Road in the Bronx to North Carolina by the end of the summer. More than two hundred employees will be out of a job. Some have been with the company for over thirty years.
Old London makes Melba toast, bagel chips, pita chips, a cheese waffle snack and other crisp-bread snacks that are distributed throughout the United States. The employees are pleased with their working conditions and the company is doing well.
However, the Old London equipment is old and the building structure does not promote efficiency. Renovating the Eastchester Road plant would not be practical according to the chief financial officer. He said New York City simply does not have what they are looking for. End of story. Source
