Health Care Reform Bill Passes (Dashboard)

Our president is a happy man now that the health care reform bill passed the House of Representatives last night in a 219 to 212 vote. The vote had no Republican support and 34 Democrats voted against it.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that “This legislation will lead to healthier lives, more liberty to pursue hopes and dreams and happiness for the American people.” The victory has been compared to milestones such as civil rights acts, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

The legislation has had a bumpy ride. The Democrats’ filibuster-proof majority was shaken when Republican Scott Brown won the Massachusetts Senate seat in January. Conservative Democrats withheld their votes until yesterday afternoon when President Obama promised to write an order declaring that federal funds would not be used for abortions.

New York and several large states need to have a reconciliation package passed by the Senate in order to avoid billions of dollars in extra costs for the state and city.

Thousands of anti-reform Tea Party activists protested outside the Capitol all weekend, at times shouting racist, anti-gay and anti-Semitic remarks at Congress members. One Congressman said someone spit at him. Several arrests were made.

Some of the healthcare changes will go into effect as early as this year but the nation will not realize the full impact of the bill until 2020.
