Sixteen Food Companies Agree to Reduce Salt in Products

Our Mayor Bloomberg is determined to make us healthy whether we like it or not. He's not satisfied with whipping New Yorkers into shape. Hizzoner has spearheaded National Salt Reduction Initiative, a voluntary program for food companies who are committed to reducing the amount of sodium in their products.

The goal is to foster behavior that helps reduce the risk of conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke and cardiovascular disease which often result from diets rich in sodium. Not everyone is excited about the program. Some think that the only thing it fosters is government interference.

Some of the partner companies, for instance Starbucks and Kraft Foods, had already begun a salt reduction initiative prior to joining NSRI. Sixteen companies are on board thus far. A partial list is provided below.

National Salt Reduction Initiative
  • H.J. Heinz Co.
  • Kraft Foods Inc.
  • Starbucks
  • Au Bon Pain
  • Boar's Head
  • Goya
  • Hain Celestial
  • Uno Chicago Grill
  • FreshDirect

This is really good news. I get so frustrated looking at nutrition facts and seeing ridiculous sodium contents without a real reason. Often times sweet cereals will have more sodium than you could imagine, and truthfully they don't even need it. One of my favorite new products that almost any grocer carries is sodium free canned vegetables. I always make sure to pick those over canned vegetables with salt already added. You are in control, make the right decisions!
