Where Do Water Bugs Come From?
April showers bring May flowers and lots of water bugs. You know the creepy crawlers. They look like a cockroach on steroids. Seeing one in your house may scare you into bad health.
Extermination websites say water bugs come out during the months of May, June and July but that doesn't mean you won't see one in the winter. This year we had our first sighting in March so it promises to be a long, hot summer.
There's nothing you can do about the water bugs you're bound to see outdoors but we posted helpful information to help keep them out of your home.

There's nothing you can do about the water bugs you're bound to see outdoors but we posted helpful information to help keep them out of your home.
Things your exterminator doesn't want you to know
- WHERE DO WATER BUGS LIVE? They can be found near streaming water. In a city like New York that would be the sewer.
- HOW DO WATER BUGS COME INTO YOUR HOUSE? They come inside through drains and overflow drains. Once water bugs get in, they travel through buildings the same way we do: by stairs, elevators and through the door. They also crawl along walls; so if you have holes around water pipes, and behind or around cabinets you may want to seal them.
- HOW CAN YOU KEEP THEM OUT? Sink strainers or hair traps come in different sizes and fit right into the drain. They can be found in any dollar store, hardware store or housewares store or section. Water can get out but nothing can come in. Overflow drains are a little tricky. I cover mine with clear packing tape and replace the tape when I wash the sink.
If your bathroom sink overflow drain is the size of dime sized hole(s) don't think that the hole is too small for a water bug to crawl through. Some bathtub overflow drains are concealed. If your bathtub has a stopper on a chain the overflow drain may be under the mount that the chain is anchored to. Check it out.
- If you see more than an occasional water bug in your house it's possible that they are nesting in your home. Call the exterminator.

Ugh. But good advise for New Yorkers. ha.
