NYS Passes Electronic Waste Disposal Laws

New York State has passed a law governing disposal of electronic waste, becoming the 23rd state to adopt e-waste laws. Under the new law NYS product manufacturers will be required to provide free recycle or reuse programs for consumers by April 2011.

New York City approved a less stringent e-waste law in 2008 but two trade associations for the electronics industry filed a complaint in an attempt to block implementation. Let's see how they respond to the NYS legislation.

The new law seeks to protect human health and the environment from toxins such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Not all products are included in the measure. Sample items are listed below.

Covered by e-waste laws
  • TV sets
  • Computers
  • Printers
  • Keyboards
  • DVD and MP3 players, etc.
Not covered
  • Refrigerators
  • Washing machines
  • Clothes dryers
  • Microwave ovens, etc.
We'll keep you posted as new information becomes available. One source link below maps to the NY Times coverage of the new law. Check the "States and cities" link to see where individual jurisdictions stand. The last link maps to information about current electronic product disposal options in NYC.
