Gospel Music Icon Walter Hawkins Loses Cancer Battle
Gospel music icon and pastor Bishop Walter Hawkins succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Sunday. He died in his California home at the age of 61. The announcement came from his brother Edwin Hawkins who sang Oh Happy Day in the seventies.
Bishop Hawkins was a singer, songwriter, producer and arranger. His singing career spanned more than thirty years and included gospel favorites Going Up Yonder and I'm Going Away. He was married to gospel singer Tremaine Hawkins. After they divorced they often performed together.
Bishop Hawkins was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame; and is a Grammy Award winner. He is survived by two children and two grandchildren. Source
