Avandia Ruling
Restrict Sales (7-16-2010)
A federal medical advisory panel voted on the controversial diabetes drug Avandia this week. The results were mixed, with some in favor of withdrawing the drug from the market, and others recommending stringent restrictions placed on sales.
FDA drug center director Dr. Janet Woodcock said the agency would consider regulatory options. They will come to a decision as soon as possible and make a public announcement.
Avandia has been linked to an increase in heart attack risk. Yet, one diabetes patient who spoke during this week's meeting said he has been using Avandia for ten years and it's improved his quality of life. He says a negative position on Avandia would be a death sentence for people like him.
In other news, Bloomberg news is reporting that Avandia drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to a $460 million settlement to resolve about 10,000 lawsuits related to allegations that Avandia can cause heart attacks and strokes. GSK has been accused of hiding the drug's heart attack risk factor.
