The news media is excited about Public Advocate Bill de Blasio's new Internet directory of New York City's worst slumlords. His goal is to shame these landlords into making necessary repairs to their property.
The real shame is that the top two offenders each have over one thousand violations. What's the point in reporting this type of bum if NYC allows them to get away with denying heat to tenants, refusing to make necessary repairs and other serious infractions? Excuse us for our lack of enthusiasm.
The Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) has had this same database in their possession for some time. The only difference is that now it's searchable and the public has access to it. The real news will be when authorities begin to fine landlords for violations such as leaks, pests, mold, no heat and excessive disrepair.
All is not lost. The database does make it possible for apartment shoppers to search for information about prospective landlords. You can search by landlord, borough, address or key word. The list is also available in Spanish. Check the source links below to see who made the list.
