Trivia: NYC Fun Facts

These are fun. When Did the Statue of Liberty Turn Green? contains 101 questions about New York that have been submitted to the New York Historical Society Library. Documentarian Ric Burns worked with the institution to answer those questions in a book. Some of the responses are provided below.

Did You Know That:
  • The Wyckoff Farmhouse in Flatbush, Brooklyn is the oldest building in NYC. It was built in 1652.
  • Fifth and Sixth Avenues have the longest cross-town Manhattan block between them.
  • The first automobile fatality in North America happened on 8th Avenue at 74th Street in 1899.
  • The Bronx Bombers changed their name from the New York Highlanders to the Yankees in 1913.
  • The Statue of Liberty used to be brown. Her copper turned green as a result of oxidation by 1920.
These factoids are courtesy of the NY Post. Check the source link to read their feature article which contains more New York fun facts, and to see an old postcard photo of the Statue of Liberty when she was still brown. Source
