Singer Solomon Burke Dies at 70
Ordained minister and singer Solomon Burke died of natural causes on an airplane in Amsterdam yesterday at the age of 70. He was scheduled to perform at a soldout concert in Amsterdam this week.
Mr. Burke was born in a Philadelphia church and went on to sing gospel and soul music throughout his life. He sang I Wish I Knew (How it Feels to be Free) in 1968 and released the song a second time in 1999, introducing it to new generations. His singing was featured in two popular movies: The Blues Brothers and Dirty Dancing.
Solomon Burke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. He's been married three times and is survived by 21 children, 90 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
