"Family Jewels" New Season Debuts with Cancer Episode

Gene Simmons Family Jewels debuts at 9 PM Sunday night on A&E. The show will reach a milestone this season when the family celebrates their 100th episode and becomes TV's longest running reality show.

The fifth season debut deals with a very real cancer scare for Shannon Tweed. As a result of her personal experience, Tweed and her longtime mate Gene Simmons have become advocates for cancer awareness. Source

Davey Crockett Star Fess Parker Dies at 85

Fess Parker who portrayed Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone on TV died of natural causes at his California home on Thursday.

Parker also starred in other TV shows and movies including Old Yeller. By the mid-seventies he left the acting circuit and became a successful businessman and real estate developer. In 1987 he opened the Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard with his son.

Fess Parker is a Fort Worth native. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, two children and eleven grandchildren. Source

Teenager Arrested for Racist Walmart Announcement

A sixteen year old boy has been arrested for the comment that shocked shoppers in a New Jersey Walmart store when "Attention Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now" came over the public-address system on Sunday night.

The teen was arrested on Friday and charged with harassment and bias intimidation. He was released to the custody of his parents. His name is withheld because he is a minor.

Walmart management immediately apologized for the comment. They have made changes to their public address system which can be accessed through the Washington Township store's courtesy telephones. Source

NYC 5-Minute Grace Period for Expired Parking Begins

New York City's five minute grace period for expired parking goes into effect on Sunday. The new law gives drivers an additional five minutes to move out of an alternate-side or Mini-Meter spot before they can get a parking ticket. It does not apply to parking meters that accept coins. Source

MTA Revised Proposal Saves Bus and Subway Lines

The Metropolitan Transit Authority has released a revised proposal which reflects bus and subway lines that will be spared as a result of commuters' emotional responses at this month's public hearings.

The M train got a reprieve. It will keep its normal route until it reaches Manhattan. At Essex Street it will take over the route of the V train which will be discontinued. Weekend service on the M22 is no longer on the chopping block; and weekend service on the Bx33 will be restored. The Bx18, Q14 and Q42 are among the buses that get to stay.

Oprah Winfrey's Defamation Case Trial to Begin

Nomvuyo Mzamane has charged Oprah Winfrey with defamation; because Winfrey said she had lost confidence in the former headmistress of her South African school for girls. The comment was made in relation to a 2007 sexual abuse scandal at the school.

Mzamane lived in Philadelphia when she was recruited for the school. She was subsequently fired although it was a dorm matron who was charged with the abuse. Mzamane said her reputation was ruined as a result of Oprah Winfrey's comment, which made it difficult for her to find employment in the United States. She has since been hired at another South African school according to the Associated Press.

A federal judge has refused to dismiss Mzamane's claim against Miss O. The case is scheduled to be tried in a Philadelphia court beginning on March 29.The trial is expected to last for two weeks. Mzamane is seeking more than $250,000. Source

Former CSI Star Gary Dourdan Victim of Domestic Abuse

The 21-year-old girl friend of original CSI cast member Gary Dourdan, 43, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery on Tuesday. She was released on $20,000 bail; and is scheduled to return to court on April 6.

When police responded to a domestic disturbance call at Dourdan's California home they observed scratches and bruises on him. Radaronline posted the court documents to their website. Source

Alex Chilton of the Boxtops Dies

Rocker Alex Chilton died in a New Orleans hospital on Wednesday at the age of 59. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack but that must be confirmed through autopsy results.

Chilton was only sixteen years old when he sang the vocals for the Box Tops hit The Letter in 1967. He also recorded Cry Like a Baby with the group. They broke up in 1970 and the following year Chilton became part of a new group called Big Star. They recorded several albums together before they broke up in 1975.

By the nineties Big Star had achieved underground cult status and they reunited. They were scheduled to perform this weekend in Austin, Texas.

Alex Chilton is a Memphis native. He is survived by his wife and one son. Source

Recall on Graco High Chairs

Graco has announced a recall on Harmony high chairs due to screws and plastic brackets that can fail and pose a falling hazard to babies. They have received 464 related complaints with 24 injuries reported.

Consumers should stop using these high chairs and contact Graco to receive a free repair kit. Recalled products were sold nationwide at stores that include Toys 'R' Us, Babies 'R' Us and Target between 2003 and 2010. PepsiCo to Remove Sugary Soft Drinks from Schools

PepsiCo has announced that they will stop distributing sugary soft drinks to schools worldwide. They will only sell water, fat-free or low fat milk, and juice without added sugar in primary schools. Secondary schools will be limited to the same drinks but they will receive low-calorie soft drinks, as well.

The plan is an effort to help cut down on childhood obesity. It will be fully implemented in more than 200 countries by 2012. Coca Cola announced a similar global sales initiative this month but only for primary schools. Source

Kraft Foods to Reduce Sodium Content by 10%

Kraft Foods, Inc. has announced plans to reduce sodium in its North American brands by an average of 10% over the next two years. Some products will have a reduction as high as 20%. Products that are already low in sodium will not be affected. Source
